Shop Love: FactoryLux

Hi All!

I hope you have had a lovely week so far!

Today’s post is about a wonderful, inspiring business that I know well and have been featuring in various publications over the past 4-5 years. FactoryLux are a truly extraordinary business model. *NOTE* If you want to start up a business- follow in their footsteps!

I visited their awesome factory in Hebden Bridge, Yorkshire last year and had a tour of the place as well as getting a chance to make my own industrial light. It was clearly obvious from the beginning that this place was different to other factories. The employees seemed really happy and driven- a testament to the founders and management. It didn’t feel like ‘work’- more like a bunch of people making lights because they actually wanted to.

They had recently moved into a huge new space with massive windows on every wall- there is so much natural light! And it helps that the communal areas are styled with well-designed furniture, (cool industrial pieces alongside vintage ones) and of course- amazing light fittings throughout.

FactoryLux (or Urban Cottage Industries as some people know it as) was founded in 2007 when a couple of brilliant people saw the opportunity to sell old, industrial lighting from big, old redundant factories throughout the country and little did they know industrial lighting would become a massive trend that is still continuing today.

In 2014, Factorylux launched ‘Made For You’ the world’s first next day bespoke lighting service. And, this is mainly what I want to tell you about today! It’s such a simple, brilliant concept.

Head to the Made for You section of their site and what you’ll see is an easy-to-use drop down menu. (see above for an idea of what the site is like).

From there you choose the following:

  • Your style of lampshade (or no lampshade if you just want an exposed bulb)
  • Colour of the lampshade (they even have classic shiny gold now!)
  • Lamp holder
  • Ceiling rose
  • Chain style
  • Flex style and colour (they have around fifty to choose from!)
  • Light bulb shape and style
  • And you even have the option to have is assembled for you or they can send you the parts and you assemble it at home yourself.

Then they deliver it the next day to you! Amazing. Nothing leaves their premises that isn’t of the highest quality and tested a million ways. Safety first!

Tom Dixon at Maison & Objet, Paris

Hi All!

It’s Maison & Objet in Paris this week, and for those of you who don’t know what M&O is- it is the first global interiors trade show of the industry calendar. Businesses attend to purchase new stock for the next season, interior designers and professionals go to be the first to know about the interiors trends of the near future and journalists and stylists attend to report back to the rest of the world as to what you will see coming through onto shop shelves in the seasons ahead.

Tom Dixon (one of the most influential British design brands) has appointed me as their ‘Reporter on the ground’ at M&O and I will be attending the mammoth event with my trusty camera and thus be flooding your instagram/twitter and facebook feeds with the latest and most beautiful new designs as and when I come across them!(If you are heading there, look out for the TD stand in Hall 7, Stand A43)

Tom Dixon themselves are launching their gorgeous new range of accessories that fall under the new trend going by the name of ‘Iridescence’.

My favourite gifts for Christmas under £35

Hi All,

Christmas is so close! Only 4 weeks away! I thought I’d give you a hand in the gift department. Here are 12 gifts that I think are fab for this Christmas, and they’re all under £35.

I want to give a special shout out to Crisis. My mother-in-law and I give this to each other every year. You pay £22.29 and you can reserve a spot for a homeless person this Christmas day. They receive support, 3 hot meals, showers, a health check, a new haircut and training and support for the future. You can buy it in your friends/family member’s name and give it to them as their gift in a card.

I particularly like number 6, the London Brew Tea, it is perfect for your international friends (watch out friends in Aus- you know what you’re getting!)

If you want any gift ideas for this year- just drop me a line! I’m happy to steer you in the right direction.

Samsung Serif TV

Samsung Serif TV

Hi All!

I went to the launch recently of the new Samsung Serif TV and my first thought was ‘Why has it taken so long for someone to design a TV this beautifully?’. It took the creativity and vision of the award-winning design duo Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec to be the first.

TV’s have always just been rectangle objects that sit in the corner, or increasingly so-mounted onto the wall above the fireplace to become a feature of the room.. (this is one of my personal design no-no’s).

However, this TV is as gorgeous to look at as it is functional. It takes a lot to make me do a double take when I walk past a new item but I truly think this is amazing! You can have this slim-line design on legs or you can sit it on your bookshelf.

It’s available in three sizes and starts from £499! So much cheaper than I was expecting and you can pre-order from here or here.

I’ll be pre-ordering mine, fo shiz.

* I was not paid or incentivised to write this feature- I just truly love this design*

Latest project: The FOLD, London Showroom

Hi All,

I have spent the last couple of months working on a new project for a beautiful fashion label called The Fold, London. They are based in Clerkenwell in central London on the corner of St. Johns Square.

The Fold is a contemporary fashion label for the ‘modern, professional woman’. Their pieces are made of the highest quality (using crepes, silks and wools) and are designed in London and manufactured in Europe.

Kate Middleton and Samantha Cameron, Jodie Kidd and Jane Asher are just some of the high profile people that have been spotted out and about in The Fold clothing too!

I was brought on board to re-style the showroom in St Johns Square. It was a plain white space with loads of potential. There was nothing between the showroom and the office so I installed an 8metre long wall of blue-grey velvet curtains hanging from bright gold curtain poles so now there are two distinct spaces.

I also designed a freestanding, marble topped counter on castors so it can be wheeled around as and when needed. This is the space where you can have one-on-one consultations with their in-house stylist.

The bathroom is now a stylish space too with geometric wallpaper with white plywood accents.

The Fold was such a wonderful company to work with. I hope you enjoy these images as much I enjoyed creating them!
